Hazardous Waste Sites on Long Island
The Hazardous Waste Sites on Long Island map allows users to select
among map layers identifying the location and source of various types of
hazardous waste sites, and overlay them on the map depicting breast
cancer relative incidence by ZIP Code. The hazardous waste site map layers
display data on:
- Inactive Hazardous Waste Sites – The site names and locations of hazardous waste sites no longer in operation over the years 1980-1995. The data are from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC).
- Active Hazardous Waste Sites – The site names, type of site, and the locations that generated hazardous waste and were in operation over the years 1980-1995 (estimated). The data are from NYSDEC. The categories for type of site include:
- Waste-to-energy facility
- Landfill gas recovery facility
- Solid waste transfer station
- Regulated medical waste facility
- Debris landfill
- Solid waste ash monofill
- Other solid waste site
- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Biennial Reporting System (BRS) – Data on the location, sources, and types of hazardous waste from large quantity generators, and data on waste management practices from treatment, storage, and disposal facilities over the years 1989-1999. BRS is a national reporting system operated by the EPA.
